Cable modem for charters not working with Comcast?

I got this Motorola cable modem from broadbandoffers.com for Charter Communications. After 1 year I moved to another state where there was no service available from charters so I ordered cable internet with Comcast. Now my Motorola cable modem is not working with Comcast. The Comcast people said it is programmed for charter and can not be used? 
Is this true? How can they do that? I thought it depends on the MAC address on the modem. Anyway is there any way to make it work? Any hack anybody knows?
